The Annals
Tacitus' Annals (c. 116 CE, here in Thomas Gordon's 18th-century translation) chronicles the Roman Empire under the early emperors, this portion covering the reign of Tiberius (Books I–VI). With mordant concision and psychological insight, Tacitus exposes the corruption, fear, and hypocrisy of imperial power and the decay of republican liberty under autocracy. It is among the greatest works of Roman historiography and a searching study of tyranny.
