Apology
Plato's record of Socrates's defense speech at his trial in Athens in 399 BCE, on charges of impiety and corrupting the youth. Though composed some years after the event, it is widely regarded as the closest thing we have to Socrates's own voice and as the founding statement of the philosophical examined life. The trial ended in Socrates's conviction and execution by hemlock.
