A Dialogue between Sylla and Eucrates
A short philosophical dialogue (1745) in which the Roman dictator Sulla justifies to the philosopher Eucrates his extraordinary decision to lay down absolute power and retire to private life. Montesquieu uses the confrontation to probe ambition, glory, tyranny, and the strange psychology of a man who seized supreme power only to relinquish it.
