The Master Builder
A late play by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, published and first performed in 1892. The aging architect Halvard Solness, haunted by guilt for the success he built on others' suffering, is unsettled by the arrival of a young woman from his past who demands he climb the tower of his newest house. The play is one of Ibsen's most symbolic and psychologically probing works, often read as his own reckoning with artistic aspiration and old age.
